The Alpine Tunnel Historic District, from Atlantic to Pacific and return

The Alpine tunnel under the Continental Divide completed the Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad’s route from Denver to Gunnison in 1882. GARNA has organized hikes on the trail from Hancock to the East Portal many times, now we complete the journey over Altman Pass (the Continental Divide) to the West Portal where volunteer groups have helped the USFS restore some of the 1880’s railroad buildings. This hike will be approximately eight miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,200 ft., including 400 ft. back up from the West Portal to the divide. Although not technically difficult, this is an all-day outing, so we must limit the trip to 15 experienced hikers.

Note: Since we will cross a 12,000 ft. pass (twice) during lightning season, this outing is highly weather dependent and subject to rescheduling to another weekend or an earlier start time.

The hike leader is John McCarthy. John is a GARNA Board member, one of the GARNA Hiking Club founders and organizers, a Salida Museum volunteer and is a railroad history buff. He has presented numerous programs on local railroad history to area youth and adults.

The cost of the program is $10 for GARNA members; $13 for non members. Online registration is available below via our secure, pay pal site. Please note: you do not need a pay pal account, only a credit card. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs.

Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
