Join GARNA and the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas to visit the Coldharbour Institute property. Coldharbour is seven miles east of Gunnison on Hwy 50. Butch Clark, a local visionary and early environmental activist, owned this 333 acre ranch for nearly 30 years, largely allowing nature to take its course. In the process of donating the property to the Coldharbour Institute, today the land includes over two miles of Tomichi Creek, thriving wetlands that are under conservation easement with the Natural Resource Conservation Service. By donating the land to the Coldharbour Insitute, Butch is providing for an opportunity for this gorgeous piece of land to inspire conservation and sustainability research, development and education forever.

Coldharbour partners with the Masters in Environmental Management program at Western State Colorado University. Students and faculty share their expertise and vision with Coldharbour, and Coldharbour provides a natural and unique spot for study, experimentation, cultural exchange, and fun outdoor experiences.

Our October 23 tour will start at the 110 year old stone house that was built by an artist/judge who not only designed the house, but cut and laid the stones from a quarry near the property. The tour will visit the old barn where people would drink and dance during Prohibition. Participants will be led through the future permaculture gardens, through the luscious grasses, past sculptural endeavors of generations of folks, and down to Tomichi Creek. The tour will look at indigenous plants, invasive weeds, and beneficial crops as well as trees, water, birds, and animals.

The tour will be led by Western State Colorado University Master’s in Environmental Management candidates who are carrying out projects at Coldharbour. Suzanne Ewy, Western State Colorado University’s Coldharbour Chair in Environment & Sustainability and Coldharbour’s Executive Director will also be on hand to present additional information.

Learn more about Coldharbour with this interpretive brochure developed by Western student Sierra Halverson.
