Spend the day in historic Leadville with GARNA.

As a follow up to GARNA’s very popular geology talks, take a special guided tour of National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in downtown Leadville. Known as the “Smithsonian of the Rockies” and the “Premier Showcase of American Mining”, this 25,000 square foot museum is a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery, development and processing of our nation’s natural resources. Through three levels of exhibits, you will be immersed in the story of mining. Wander through replicas of caves and mines to learn about coal, gold, and other extraordinary gems and minerals found by geologists and miners around the world.

After lunch on your own, take a guided tour of Leadville’s most famous building, the Tabor Opera House. Built in 1879 by Leadville mining magnate HAW Tabor, the auditorium is largely unchanged and retains a palpable sense of early Colorado history. You can share the stage where numerous 19th century luminaries once stood, including Oscar Wilde, Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, and William Cody among many others. Of particular interest are original hand painted backdrops hanging above the stage and several wall sized posters advertising popular acts from the 1890s.
