“The Hills Are Alive” Leadville Wildflower Hike

July 27 @ 8:30 am - 2:00 pm

Photo: Gwen Meythaler

Led by Leadville local Glenda Dunn, GARNA is hosting a short hike (3 to 4 miles) in an area locally known as Alpine Meadow or “Hills are Alive” in the Leadville Mining District east of Leadville. The area covers sub-alpine, alpine and a bit of tundra. The group will be hiking on an old mining/jeep road mostly uphill and then downhill on the return. This area is known for its abundance of wildflowers and we hope to see Blue Flax, Columbine, Jacob’s Ladder, Purple Fringe, Alpine Sunflowers, Monkshood, Wild Delphiniums, and Old Man of the Mountain! We will have a snack at the top and expect to return to the cars about 2:00 pm. The road to the wildflower site is accessible for all vehicles.

Glenda Dunn has been a Leadville resident since 1962. She is a high-altitude, organic gardener and wildflower enthusiast. She has been hiking and backpacking in the Leadville area and the Flat Tops for more than 50 years. She learned the wildflowers one at a time while backpacking many years ago. As a mom backpacking with her two young children, she was selective about how much weight she carried, so she took apart and only brought the middle of an old Peterson Field Guide to Wildflowers so she would have the photos to help her with identification. For three years she lead wildflower hikes for the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad. She started a local Leadville-based hiking group about ten years ago. You will find Glenda either somewhere in town volunteering or in her garden!

The cost of the tour is $5 for GARNA members; $8 for non members. Space is limited. Online registration is available below via our secure, pay pal site. Please note: you do not need a pay pal account, only a credit card. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs.
