GARNA and GUIDESTONE CAMP INTERN JOB DESCRIPTIONS

The Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and Guidestone are each hiring a high school camp intern (sophomores- seniors)!  There is a position with each organization, requiring availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a series of weeks.   You may apply for one or both organizations, but can only be hired by one.

 JOB TITLE:  Summer Camp Intern

CLASSIFICATION:  Contract, 8 hours/day, 8:45 to 4:15 pm

+ 30 min on your own time to prepare for a session activity (i.e. plan a team building game)

 CONTRACT AMOUNT:  $10 / hr

GARNA Nature Camp is a 6 week series meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays = $960

Guidestone Garden Camp is an 8 week series meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays = $1,280

FUNCTION OR PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION:  GARNA and Guidestone seek 2 high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors to serve as Camp Interns during the summer.  Camp Interns will encourage younger youth (Grades K – 6) who are participating in camp and lead team building games and activities.

ABOUT NATURE AND GARDEN CAMP: 

Both camps are for students grades K – 6.   In Nature Camp, students travel to a different public land location each week to learn about a different theme such as the watershed, wildlife, pollinators, or wilderness skills through games, art, hands-on activities and exploration!  In Garden Camp, students will engage in hands on activities which include food growing methods, harvesting techniques, ecosystems, plant life cycles, and pollinators at either Longfellow Elementary or Salida Middle School Garden sites and travel to other sites such the Monarch Spur Trail and the Community & School Farm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF INTERNSHIP:  Responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:  Help create a safe, positive, inclusive, and enthusiastic camp environment.   Be respectful of participants’ needs, interacting and engaging with each camper.  Help participants first, but also engage in daily camp activities oneself.   Help with set up and take down of activities.  Lead a team building activity at each session.  Participate in reflections with staff at the end of each day.

Potential applications should be a high school sophomore, junior, or senior who is safety minded, flexible, responsible, and enthusiastic.   Youth interns do not need to have exceptional skills in the outdoors or with gardening but should enjoy working with younger students and be friendly and willing to support campers throughout the activities.   Interns will lead team building activities for a group of up to 15 students.

TRAVEL:  Both camps meet at Longfellow Elementary on Tuesday and at Salida Middle School on Thursday.   For Nature Camp, transportation to public lands locations will be provided.

CAREER TRACK:  This position is grant funded for the summer through Marijuana Excise Tax Advisory Board (METAB).  Interns will be given an opportunity to apply to work with future field trips or internships.  GARNA and Guidestone will also be happy to share further information about jobs with partners such as: Colorado Parks and Wildlife, US Forest Service, BLM, local ranches and farms, and supply recommendation letters to accompany a resume.
