Nature Series – Astronomy Program: Craters of the Moon

April 27, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join GARNA and Central Colorado Humanists for Scott Adams’ final astronomy program in Chaffee County. He will present an introduction to astronomy from the back yard astronomer’s point of view. Highlights of the talk include a review of various types of telescopes including GARNA’s new Orion 10 EQ-G 10” Reflector Scope. According to Scott “This scope’s huge 10″ optics and precise, heavy-duty computerized GoTo mount will show you what big-telescope performance is all about”.  The program will also include types of deep space objects “out there”, and provide comparisons of what viewers actually see through amateur telescopes versus professional telescopes.

Scott attended the University of Kansas obtaining a BS degree with majors in geology and mathematics and an MS degree in geophysics. He pursued a 31-year career as a petroleum geophysicist, geologist, exploration program manager and reservoir manager with Chevron Corporation, with numerous domestic and international assignments. Scott and his wife Diana retired to Salida in 2006. He has given several talks on earth, life sciences and photography for GARNA, the Salida Sunday Science forum, Columbine Gem and Mineral Club, and the Geologists of Jackson Hole.

Scott became interested in astronomy in early 2015 after reading a book on particle physics. (There is a bit of a scale difference there, but particle physics and cosmology are closely connected!) Scott was instrumental in putting together the Orion 10 EQ-G from a mixture of telescope equipment that was donated to GARNA last summer. Scott’s non-scientific passions are playing solo “finger-style” guitar, building steel-string guitars (15 to date), hiking and taking photos. Scott and his wife are moving out of state therefore this will be his last GARNA presentation.

From 7:00 to 7:45 pm, Scott will present on backyard astronomy. Moon gazing with the Orion Atlas EQ-G 10 will follow. Both the presentation and stargazing will take place at Scott’s home located just outside of Salida. Directions and more information will be provided to those who register.

The cost of the program is $5 for GARNA members and $7 for non-members. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. Space is limited and registration is available via the paypal button below. Please note: you do not need a paypal account, only a credit card.
