Tour the Swissvale Earthship
November 14, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
GARNA is hosting a 3rd tour of the 6,000 square foot earthship recently completed in Swissvale east of Salida. The building is an energy efficient, off-the-grid structure partially earth-bermed and built with a variety of recycled materials including 4,000 earth-rammed tires, aluminum cans and glass bottles. The earthship was built by Earthship Biotecture, a Taos, NM earthship construction company, and involved volunteers from around the world. The build was a field study project by Earthship Academy students. Find out more about the Swissvale earthship project from Earthship Biotecture’s blog HERE.
The earthship owner, Hollie Hirst, will lead the tour. Hollie purchased 16 acres in 2001 when she was living in Salida, then moved to Denver to do graduate work in organizational management and development. After some years of effort, she managed to persuade Michael Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture, to design and build her earthship.
The Mountain Mail published an article about the project in the September 11, 2015 issue. You can read the full article HERE.
