Fossils, Bones and Rocks!
September 22 @ 8:30 am - 3:00 pm
Handle rocks, minerals, and fossils! Hear about the geology of Fremont’s fossil-rich areas by Royal Gorge Museum staff, and take a guided tour of the museum’s new exhibit Digging It–Fossils of Fremont County. This 6.5 hour tour (including travel time from Salida and back) will take you from the museum out to the field for a two-hour tour of fossil sites led by BLM Paleontologist, Andrew Smith. Field sites will include Skyline Drive, Garden Park Fossil Area, and the Bridge Creek Interpretive Trail.
Presenters include Andrew Smith and Kathleen Eaton. Andrew Smith holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Geology with a concentration in Paleobiology. Soon after graduating, he joined the Bureau of Land Management and the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center in Canon City as a paleontologist specializing in education and interpretation, scientific permitting, and monitoring of historic paleontology sites. Kathleen Eaton is the Education Coordinator at the museum.
