Evolved for Fire: Colorado’s Love Story with Burning

October 19, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Over 100 years of active fire suppression has knocked our fire-adapted habitats out of balance, resulting in catastrophic fires that our ecosystems struggle to recover from. As more and more people make their homes in the wild-urban interface, we expose ourselves to more risk. This interactive, fascinating and fun learning event for all ages will combine presentation, games, and discussion to teach about the coevolution of our state’s ecosystems with wildfire and how we can move beyond suppression to create fire adapted communities. We are proud to have Lou Bean leading this discussion.

This is a free seminar; please click here to register.

Lou Bean is a sawyer and fire practitioner from Colorado. In addition to fire mitigation, prescribed burning, suppression, and burn scar recovery work, Bean is passionate about empowering community members and early career professionals with training and education, both in their work leading saw and burn crews with the Conservation Corps, coordinating the Neighborhood Ambassador outreach program with SPAWP, and volunteering as a structural and wildland firefighter with Chaffee County Fire. Bean also runs The Blaze Project, which designs fire ecology curriculum and events for classrooms and non-traditional learning environments and providing mitigation training to land owners.
