Introduction to Flyfishing

July 19 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

GARNA is excited to collaborate with the Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited for this event!

Join us for an introductory Fly Fishing Workshop that covers all the essentials in an engaging and hands-on format! You’ll gain the skills and knowledge needed to become a proficient fly fisher. Discover why fly fishing is so captivating as we explore the fascinating world of trout and their diet of aquatic insects. Get acquainted with the necessary tackle, including rods, reels, leaders, and tippets, and learn how to select the right equipment. Knot tying techniques will be demonstrated. Delve into the intricacies of trout feeding habits. Explore the different types of flies and their resemblance to real insects. Discover various fly fishing methods, from dry flies to nymphing and streamers. Gain a deeper understanding of fish habits and learn how to read the water effectively. The workshop includes in-depth fly casting demonstration and instruction session, where you’ll have the opportunity to practice your skills. Finally, put your newfound knowledge to the test as you venture out to the pond to catch your own fish.

We will begin with a classroom session at Valley View Nature Learning Center, then we’ll head to Frantz Lake and put our new skills to work.

Students should bring their own gear if possible. If not, the Chaffee Mobile Gear Library can loan you a rod and reel. Let us know when you register if you need to borrow gear.

This event is free and open to the public. Class size is limited and registration is required. Click here to register.

GARNA’s community and youth programs empower people with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience to connect with and care for the environment. We focus on building relationships – with ourselves, with each other, and with the land – through meaningful experiences and shared learning. By combining empowerment with connections, we help foster a deep sense of responsibility that goes beyond our programs, inspiring lifelong stewardship and active participation in protecting the ecosystems we all depend on.
