Voices for the Earth – citizen activism preserving national treasures

March 26, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Voices imageImagine a graded road slicing across southern Utah’s wild and beautiful Capitol Reef National Park to service nearby oil and gas wells…imagine a gigantic complex of Walt Disney hotels, restaurants, parking lots, and dozens of ski lifts on the fragile, high altitude valley that is now part of Sequoia National Park…imagine 1200 magnificent acres on the west side of the Gore Mountain Range being stripped by loggers.

Voices for the Earth author Tony Ruckel will share an inside account of how citizen activists and responsive courts preserved national treasurers across the American West. His 2014 book vividly recounts the efforts of ordinary citizens and the lawyer representing them to preserve some of America’s most spectacular natural wonders. Learn more about Voices for the Earth.

H. Anthony (Tony) Ruckel began practicing environmental law in 1967. He served as a Regional Director and staff attorney for the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund from 1972 to 1986 and currently serves on the volunteer committee of lawyers advising the Sierra Club’s legal program. Tony’s experience in a wide array of federal and state courts including the US Supreme Court has given him unique insights into the legal, political, and social aspects of the environmental movement. Tony continues to personally explore and photograph the country’s parks, monuments and wilderness areas, particularly those in the West.

Copies of Voices for the Earth will be available for sale at the event and Tony is graciously donating 40% of the proceeds to GARNA.
