Trip to Zapata Ranch

Sign up now to ensure a spot on this always popular field trip to tour the Nature Conservancy’s 100,000 acre Zapata Ranch and get a very good view of the wild bison herd (about 2,500 animals)! This program was last offered in 2012 and quickly filled up. We will be touring the Medano Ranch for a close up look at the bison herd along with a running lecture on the herd’s history, management, and conservation future. That will be combined with another talk on the other wildlife of the 400,000 acre Great Sand Dunes conservation complex and the role that the Nature Conservancy played in the creation of the park and the Baca National wildlife refuge. We will also hike the short but somewhat steep ¼ of a mile up to Zapata Falls for a terrific overlook of the dunes and the conservation area. Tour leader Dr. Paul Robertson will talk about the general conservation of the San Luis Valley and conservation efforts along the Rio Grande River. We will have a picnic lunch at the Zapata Ranch headquarters.

Dr. Robertson is a professional ecologist and GARNA Board Chair. Currently he is adjunct faculty of Colorado Mountain College. Previously Paul served as The Nature Conservancy’s San Luis Valley Project Director.

Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
