Central Colorado contains some of the most pristine alpine lakes in the state and have some of the most beautiful species of fish found in the Colorado Rockies. Hike leader Tom Parkes has spent 12 years fishing, hiking, and camping in these alpine lakes and tundras. As a native of the state, he has always admired the solitude and scenery surrounding them. Some of Colorado’s most prominent lakes are located here in the Sawatch Range.

For this program, Tom will take the group on a short hike in to “Found” Lake just below Cottonwood Pass accessed from the Lost Lake trailhead.

The predominate species found in these lakes include Cutthroat, Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout, along with an occasional Grayling. By experiencing these beautiful bodies of water the hiker/fisherman will hopefully find a greater appreciation for our majestic mountain environment. July, August, and September are the best months to reach the higher lakes like “Found” Lake. The best mantras for these treks are conditioning and preparation.

This workshop/hike will cover backpack inventory, high country elements such as lightning, hypothermia, and giardiasis. Tom will help with identity of a few of the main species of trout found in these lakes as well as some of the best fly patterns that have been most productive for him over the years. Participants are encouraged to bring their fishing gear (accompanied with licenses) on this trip.

Tom Parkes is a Colorado native, who was raised ranching on the Western Slope. He attended Colorado State University and the University of Colorado and worked as a Pharmacist for 37 years. Tom is a long-time resident of the Upper Arkansas Valley and enjoys fishing. He is also the author of Central Colorado Alpine Lakes (Hiking/Fishing Guide) published in 2013.
