GARNA has invited experiential educator John Hankla to bring a few cast dinosaur skeletons to Salida and present a program about recent discoveries in Utah. Attendees will get up-close and see the “murderous monster” Terataphoneus and the bizarre Cosmosceratops. John will present a slideshow that will share the importance of these new dinosaurs being discovered at the Grand Staircase National Monument in southern Utah. Captain Zipline and GARNA have come together for the 2nd year to offer a chance to experience the thrill of our local Aerial Course at a great price while supporting GARNA. There are 9 different courses in the park and they are coded by difficulty levels similar to the ratings used at ski areas. A “Smart Belay” system keeps you clipped to the safety cable at all times. A local “Walk for Wilderness” will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson signing the Wilderness Act establishing our National Wilderness Preservation System. Efforts are underway to commemorate this anniversary around the country throughout the year. The US Forest Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, GARNA, the Upper Arkansas Wilderness Volunteers (a Chapter of GARNA) and the Friends of the Leadville Fish Hatchery are jointly sponsoring this event. Help celebrate National Public Lands Day and join members of GARNA’s Friends of Fourmile Chapter on their annual guided hike to Davis Meadows. Participants should wear hiking boots, a hat, and sunscreen and bring lunch but no pets. The hike will be from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This program is free but donations to the Friends of Fourmile are appreciated. If we are notified of your need to cancel within 24 hours of the program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. If minimum enrollment has not been met, programs will be cancelled 2 days before the schedule program date and your fee will be fully refunded. Please register early!
