14er Fest GARNA Lead Hikes

September 28, 2019 - September 29, 2019

Join GARNA staff and volunteers on these great hikes!

Saturday September 28th– 

8:00am – KROENKE LAKE hike – lead by Lea Frye

This moderate out and back hike features a total distance of 8.4 miles (4.2 miles one way) with 1,720’ of elevation gain. The trail follows North Cottonwood Creek as it winds back and forth through the beautiful Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. The reward for this trip comes by way of a pristine lake that sits below Browns Pass (12,400’). Cutthroats are plentiful in the lake with the best fishing on the north and east side

9:30am – SLEEPING INDIAN hike – lead by Lizzy Bauer

This trip takes you on a hike along the summit trail that leads to the highest part of Sleeping Indian (9,555’), the locals call this peak White Box. This hike also features the chance to explore a cave like feature called Fat Man Squeeze. This 1.5 mile hike with 1,300′ of elevation can will treat you to panoramic views of Buena Vista and the entire Arkansas River Valley below.

Sunday September 29th- 

8:30am – COLORADO TRAIL hike – lead by Liz Hahn

This 5 mile moderate hike starts on the north slope of Mt. Princeton near the Radio Tower Road and meanders back and forth as you head south traversing the face of the entire mountain. You will wind back and forth crossing the Maxwell Creek Drainage, the Dry Creek Drainage before finally descending back to CR 322 near the Latchaw Mine Drainage. There is a chance you may encounter wildlife along the trail and the view of the Arkansas Valley below is a sure thing.

9:00am – BROWNS CREEK hike – lead by Ruth Runge-Barnes & Lisa Nagel

This moderate out and back hike features a total distance of 6.2 miles (3.1 miles one way) with just under 1,000’ of elevation gain. You will enjoy a pleasant hike to a beautiful waterfall that features views of the Arkansas River Valley and Mt. Antero along the way. The hike has plenty of variety to keep you interested including meadows, aspen and pine forests and water crossings. Your reward will be a postcard worthy photo opportunity of Browns Falls that sit at 9,934’.

9:30am – ALPINE TUNNEL hike – Lead by Darci Kaizer

If you love high mountain views and local area history, this moderate hike is just for you. Views of Tunnel Gulch and Chalk Creek Canyon await as you hike along the route the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad route that once connected St. Elmo and Gunnison. Completed in 1881, the narrow-gauge railroad was used during the areas mining days. The Alpine Tunnel was the first tunnel through the Continental Divide. This is a 3-mile hike that ends where the east portal once stood.

ALL HIKES WILL MEET AT THE TRAILHEAD STORE IN BV (ON MAIN STREET) AT THE START TIMES LISTED ABOVE.

Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
