We are excited to announce this year’s environmental presentation speaker:
Richard P. Reading, PhD
Vice President for Conservation
Denver Zoological Foundation
Richard Reading, PhD is the Vice President for Conservation and founder of the Department of Conservation Biology at the Denver Zoological Foundation. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver and Adjoint Senior Research Professor at the University of Colorado – Denver. Dr. Reading earned his PhD in Wildlife Ecology from Yale University in 1993. Rich serves on the boards of directors or advisers for several organizations. He has published more than 165 technical publications in several journals and books, written or edited 10 books, dissertations, or special issues of journals, and produced dozens of popular articles, abstracts, and book reviews. Rich has conducted research or consulted on conservation projects in several countries on 5 continents, primarily the Great Plains of the U.S., the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, and the Kalahari of Botswana. A major focus of Rich’s research has been on developing interdisciplinary approaches to conservation.
The role of zoos has changed dramatically over the past few decades from a focus primarily on “ghee whiz” recreation to a science-based focus on conservation. Today, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums requires that institutions conduct conservation programs to receive accreditation. This talk will review the change in approach of zoos over time and then move into an in-depth discussion on how the Denver Zoo has developed a field-based conservation program that supports about 100 conservation projects in dozens of countries around the world.
A light soup dinner will be served prior to the program. The event is free and open to the public but donations are much appreciated.
