Beyond Aldo Leopold: More on public lands in the Western U.S.

February 20, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

publiclandsimageJoin GARNA for this follow-up to Wendell Winger’s presentation last March. At the beginning of the 20th century Theodore Roosevelt established 234 million acres of public lands in the U.S. These lands include wildlife refuges and national forests that we know and enjoy. The way we use these lands, determined to a great extent by how we perceive them, influences the way we live in the western U.S. today. Perception of public lands, as uniquely developed in N. America, has been largely impacted by the ideas of a few individuals. Presenter Wendell Winger will relate the philosophies of these individuals to how we live today.

Wendell’s presentation will include discussions of how, when, and why public lands in the western U.S. were established, current impacts of public lands on western economies and culture, how philosophies influencing the usage of public lands have evolved, and how these philosophies may help us understand how we use and live with public lands today.

The contributions and influences of Theodore Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, Ding Darling, Valerius Geist, and Aldo Leopold will be presented and discussed. The historical development of the ways we perceive and enjoy wildlife will be related to philosophies of public land usage. Developing and applying a “Land Ethic”, as prescribed by Aldo Leopold, will be related to the ways we perceive and address current and future usage of western public lands.

In 2004, Wendell retired from his position as a Senior Economist with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and moved to Salida. He continues to work as a volunteer educator with Trout Unlimited, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and GARNA. Wendell spends a lot of time on public lands as an avid fly fisher, hunter, backpacker, back country skier and boater.
