American Dipper program

February 26, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

dipper editedJoin the GARNA Birding Club for a program on the American Dipper on Wednesday, February 26. The American Dipper is a fascinating song bird that lives along creeks and rivers in the Western United States. The bird needs fast moving water to find its prey of aquatic insects. Because of its specialized habitat needs in Colorado and in the Arkansas Valley, the bird could be vulnerable from contamination from historic mining in the region.

Laura and Andrew Archuleta will discuss the life history of the bird and talk about their monitoring of Dippers along the Arkansas River. Laura is an environmental contaminants specialist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in the Colorado Ecological Services Field Office. She has over 17 years of experience working in Colorado on abandoned mine land reclamation, water quality, habit and watershed restoration, and pesticide contamination. Andrew is the Bureau of Land Management Field Manager based in Saguache. In the past he also worked for the USFWS as an environmental contaminants specialist and a biologist.

Their work on Dippers found some interesting results. They will share the results of their work, including the relevance to people and the Upper Arkansas Valley ecosystem. In addition, learn more about this small bird living among us. The program is free and open to the public.
