Astronomy program and stargazing: A warp speed tour of the universe

August 27, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

telescope photoScott Adams will present “A Warp Speed Tour of the Universe”, a lecture on astronomy from the back yard astronomer’s point of view. Some highlights of the talk will include: a review of various types of telescopes used by amateur astronomers and how they differ from professional observatory telescopes; a discussion on the types of deep space objects “out there”; a comparison of what viewers actually see through amateur telescopes versus professional telescopes; and a discussion of planetary “conjunctions”, with special attention to the Venus – Jupiter conjunction that will be visible that evening. Scott will also discuss the immense scale of the universe in terms of sizes of astronomical objects and distances between them. He hopes this talk will stimulate others to take an interest in the wonders of astronomy!

During the outdoor segment of the evening (directly following the talk) we hope to see, visually and through the telescope:

  • Venus – Jupiter conjunction (visible this night only!)
  • Various constellations
  • The “Summer Triangle” asterism
  • Albireo, a double star
  • The Andromeda galaxy and some of its galactic neighbors
  • Messier Object 13, and other giant globular clusters
  • Planetary Nebula Messier 57
  • Lagoon, Swan and Trifid emission nebulae
  • Various planets if they are overhead

Both the presentation and stargazing will take place at Scott’s home located just outside of Salida. More information will be provided to those who register.

Presenter:

Scott Adams attended the University of Kansas, obtaining a BS degree with majors in geology and mathematics, and an MS degree in geophysics. He pursued a 31-year career as a petroleum geophysicist, geologist, exploration program manager and reservoir manager with Chevron Corporation, with numerous domestic and international assignments. Scott and his wife Diana retired to Salida in 2006. He has given several talks on earth sciences, life sciences and photography for GARNA , the Salida Sunday Science forum, Columbine Gem and Mineral Club, and the Geologists of Jackson Hole.

Scott became interested in astronomy in early 2015 after reading a book on particle physics. (There is a bit of a scale difference there, but particle physics and cosmology are closely connected!) He is now the proud owner of two backyard telescopes. Scott’s non-scientific passions are playing solo, “finger-style” guitar, building steel-string guitars (15 to date), hiking and photography. Primary photographic subjects are landscapes, wildflowers presented in an artistic manner and abstract compositions.

Registration:

The cost of the program (presentation and stargazing) is $7 for GARNA members; $10 for non members. Online registration is available below via our secure, pay pal site. Please note: you do not need a pay pal account, only a credit card.
