Join GARNA and the Friends of Browns Canyon (FOBC) for a guided hike to explore historic mining camps and homesteads within the Browns Canyon National Monument. Other highlights include fantastic scenery and possible wildlife sightings. Michael Kunkel, former FOBC president and long time conservationist, will lead the hike.
Green Gulch is the first major drainage coming down from the Aspen Ridge heading north out of Turret on FR 184. The hike to Chloride Camp is a little over 1 mile one way, and has minimal elevation change. The site is nearly the same elevation as the trailhead, but there are a couple hundred feet of vertical up and down. The site of the camp is on the border of the Wilderness Study Area and the group will likely take a few minutes to explore the views from the terrain immediately surrounding the camp. Chloride Camp was established in 1898 and had a maximum of 60 residents. It was a tent city therefore there are no building foundations or remnants located at the site.
The day will also include a short hike uphill from the trailhead (around a half mile) and a couple hundred vertical feet to Heister’s cabins to explore this area. Both of these hikes would be considered beginner as they follow old road beds. Depending on time and participant energy, there is also the option to do a short stretch of off-trail hiking into the bottom of Green Gulch and follow it back to the road and to the trailhead to complete a short loop. The highlights of the trip will be exploring historic sites that hearty mountain folk occupied around the turn of the 20th century, located within a newly designated National Monument.
The trailhead is 2 miles north of Turret. Carpooling from Salida will be available because high clearance vehicles are required to drive all the way to the trailhead. More information will be provided to registered participants.
The cost of the outing is $5 for GARNA and/or FOBC members; $7 for non members.
