De Anza Lecture & Hike

Description: Come learn the story of Juan Bautista de Anza, governor of the Spanish province of New Mexico, and his military campaign of 1779. This early Upper Arkansas River Valley history is an exciting tale. After the talk, join in for an optional hike along the same route that de Anza and his 800 mounted soldiers once blazed.

Presenter: John Anderson is an author, artist and consultant. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2012 to launch a small consulting business allowing him the freedom to pursue his love of history, writing and the arts. Prior to working ten years in the corporate world, John served two-terms as the elected Sheriff for El Paso County, Colorado (term-limited in 2003). He completed an MBA while working as a police officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department and retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1995. Although John has traveled around the world, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own back yard in the American Southwest

Date/time: Talk is on Saturday, July 27, 9am at the Salida Museum, located at 406 1/2 W Rainbow Blvd. Salida, CO. The hike is immediately following from 11am-1:30pm, details provided upon registration.

What to bring: The hike is about a mile on mostly flat ground. Sturdy shoes, water, and hat/sunscreen are a good idea.

Cost: Talk is $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Hike is $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Combo talk/hike prices available, use the PayPal button below.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below. Please include a note with the program you are registering for.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel within 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. If minimum enrollment has not been met by program date, programs will be cancelled 2 days prior to the date and we will refund the full amount.
