GARNA will hold a program featuring local residents involved in disaster response efforts with two major natural disasters in the last few years: Super Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines and the Black Forest Fire outside of Colorado Springs.
On November 8, 2013 Super Typhoon Yolanda slammed into the southeast coast of the Philippines. With sustained winds of 190 MPH, and gusts to well over 200 MPH, Yolanda is considered to be one of the most powerful typhoons in recorded history. There were over 6,000 fatalities, and over 4 million people were left homeless. Salida resident Rob Deering was one of 17 volunteers recruited by Engineering Ministries International (EMI) of Colorado Springs, to travel to the Philippines and provide technical assistance primarily in the design and construction of water purification systems to provide safe clean drinking water for the survivors. Rob will present a slide show with photos of the destruction, the recovery efforts, the Filipino culture, and the Filipino people.
The Black Forest Fire began in June, 2013 and was the most destructive fire in Colorado’s history, destroying over 500 homes and causing two deaths. The American Red Cross established a national headquarters and the call went out for help. Over 10 volunteers from Chaffee County responded and assisted in a myriad of ways including working in a shelter, assessing the damage, and meeting the health needs of those who were evacuated. Locals Marilyn Bouldin, RN and Jody and Jim LiVecchi will talk about their experiences and share photos of the event.
Tickets will be available at the door and are $3 for GARNA members and $5 for non-association members.
Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.
