A relatively rare total eclipse of the sun will cross North America on August 21, 2017. It will be the first time in 99 years that the moon’s umbral shadow will cross the Lower 48 United States from coast to coast.
Solar eclipses occur when Earth’s moon passes between the earth and the sun, casting the moon’s shadow on Earth. This August, the shadow will cross the US diagonally, from Oregon to South Carolina. A total eclipse will be visible in portions of twelve states, and a partial eclipse will be visible in all other states within the Lower 48. In areas where totality occurs, its duration will range from 2 minutes to 2 minutes and forty seconds.
In his presentation, Scott Adams will discuss the causes and frequency of solar eclipses, historical occurrences of solar eclipses and related folklore, best areas for viewing the total eclipse of 2017, what to expect in Chaffee County, eye safety and other interesting facts about solar eclipses.
Presenter Scott Adams attended the University of Kansas, obtaining a BS degree with majors in geology and mathematics, and an MS degree in geophysics. He pursued a 31-year career as a petroleum geophysicist, geologist, exploration program manager and reservoir manager with Chevron Corporation, with numerous domestic and international assignments. Scott and his wife Diana retired to Salida in 2006. He has given several talks on earth, life sciences and photography to audiences of GARNA members, the Salida Sunday Science forum, Columbine Gem and Mineral Club, and the Geologists of Jackson Hole.
Scott became interested in astronomy in early 2015 after reading a book on particle physics. (There is a bit of a scale difference there, but particle physics and cosmology are closely connected!) He is now the proud owner of two back yard telescopes. Scott’s non-scientific passions are playing solo “finger-style” guitar, building steel-string guitars (15 to date), hiking and photography.
The program will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Salida, Fellowship Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. The cost of the program is $7 for GARNA members, $10 for non-members.
