This compelling 30 minute film is a locally relevant starting film for Saturday’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival. “Forest on Fire”, directed by Reed Harkness and produced by Heather Hawksford, follows the story of the devastating fire that ravaged the Columbia River Gorge and cautions audiences about fire safety and related education. The Eagle Creek fire resulted in massive evacuations and stranded 150 day-hikers who dramatically hiked nearly 20 miles overnight to safety. The fire was set by a 15-year-old boy who threw a lit firework into a dry ravine on the Eagle Creek Trail. This film includes accounts from an eyewitness who saw the boy start the fire, the stranded hikers, and people from the communities that persevered and took care of each other.
Following the film, GARNA and the Central Colorado Conservancy will host experts, including local wildland firefighters, discussing the science behind fire bans, safety topics, and precautions used for fire mitigation. A question and answer period will be open afterwards for public inquiries.
The film will be shown at the Salida Steamplant Theater in advance of Saturday, March 9’s evening film lineup. Doors will open at 4:00pm, film begins at 4:30pm.
