On Saturday September 27, GARNA’s Friends of Fourmile Chapter will help to celebrate National Public Lands Day with their annual guided hike, this year to Davis Meadows. This trail, redesigned and reconstructed by the Forest Service, Friends of Fourmile and Volunteers for Colorado in recent years, offers some of the most spectacular views over northern Chaffee County and the Continental Divide. The “reward” destination is the turn of the century Davis Meadow logging camp, which supplied at first ties for early railroads and later timber to help build Buena Vista. Participants should wear hiking boots, a hat, and sunscreen and bring lunch but no pets. Late September offers great aspen color but also the chance of an early season storm so warm layers are recommended. The roads to the trailhead require higher clearance or four wheel drive for short sections so drivers willing to take passengers are especially welcome. The number of hikers and vehicles available will determine whether the hike will be an “out and back” from the west end or a through hike with shuttle. The hike will begin at approximately 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Participants should meet at the restroom parking area in River Park at the east end of East Main Street in Buena Vista. This program is free but donations to the Friends of Fourmile are appreciated. Please email info@garna.org to register and to receive more information about meeting times, location and to be contacted in case weather forces some change.
Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.
Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.
