Nature Series: “The Hills are Alive” Leadville Wildflower Hike

July 18, 2018 @ 7:30 am - 2:00 pm

Photo: Gwen Meythaler

The past few summers, this hike has been led by Leadville local Glenda Dunn. This year, Glenda’s daughter Robin Dunn, a member of the Leadville “Huff and Puff” hiking group, has graciously agreed to lead this year’s hike in her mom’s place.

This short hike (3 to 4 miles) is in an area locally known as Alpine Meadow or “Hills are Alive” in the Leadville Mining District east of Leadville. The area covers sub-alpine, alpine and a bit of tundra. The group will be hiking on an old mining/jeep road mostly uphill and then downhill on the return. This area is known for its abundance of wildflowers and we hope to see Blue Flax, Columbine, Jacob’s Ladder, Purple Fringe, Alpine Sunflowers, Monkshood, Wild Delphiniums, and Old Man of the Mountain! We will have a snack at the top and expect to return to the cars about 2:00 pm. The road to the wildflower site is accessible for all vehicles.

Robin’s mom Glenda has been a Leadville resident since 1962. She is a high-altitude, organic gardener and wildflower enthusiast. She hiked and backpacked in the Leadville area and the Flat Tops for more than 50 years. She learned the wildflowers one at a time and shared her love and knowledge of wildflowers with her children from an early age. When backpacking with her two young children, she was selective about how much weight she carried, so she took apart and only brought the middle of an old Peterson Field Guide to Wildflowers so she would have the photos to help her with identification.

Information on meeting location, carpooling, etc. will be provided after registering. Register soon to reserve your spot.

The cost of the program is $5 for GARNA members; $8 for non members. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs.
