The Greater Arkansas River Nature Association and Central Colorado Conservancy are teaming up once again to bring an evening of film from Mountainfilm on Tour. Mountainfilm is a dynamic organization with a festival of films, people, stories and ideas that celebrates indomitable spirit, educates and inspires audiences, and motivates individuals and communities to advance solutions for a livable world.
The Salida festival will take place at the Salida High School Auditorium. Doors open at 6:00 pm, films begin at 7:00 pm.
The evening will include 2 hours of films including 10 films. Here is a sampling:
The Last Honey Hunter – Directed by Salida-area resident: Ben Knight – In the mist-shrouded mountains of Nepal’s Hongu River valley, the Kulung people carve their lives out of the land and practice an ancient form of animism structured around the god Rongkemi. There you will find a wiry and unassuming man named Mauli Dhan Rai, who is believed to be chosen by the gods for the perilous rite of honey harvesting. The task, which involves climbing rope ladders up sheer cliffs to cut down combs made by the world’s largest honeybee (before collecting the poisonous honey within), is extraordinarily dangerous. But it’s a spiritual pursuit soaked in myth that the Kulung believe taps directly into the gods. And with roads, technology and market forces, it may not be around for long.
Doing it Scared – 18 years ago, British climber, now resident of Tasmania, Paul Pritchard was abseiling from the top of the Totem Pole, a gravity-defying tower that juts out from the sea off the coast of Tasmania, when he dislodged a boulder that hit him on the head. In an instant, his life changed but it didn’t shut him down. Pritchard, with the help of his friends and fellow climbers, returned to the Totem Pole to challenge himself in an entirely new way.
The Buena Vista festival will take place on Friday, October 20 at the Buena Vista Community Center. Doors open at 6:00 pm, films begin at 7:00 pm. There will be a different line-up of films each night.
