Spruce Beetle Walk on Old Monarch Pass

from Table Mtn (3 of 1)Join Alex Rudney as he leads a short hike up the Old Monarch Pass road to view the progression of the spruce beetle outbreak. Alex will discuss spruce beetle biology and life cycles and look to the future of the high elevation spruce forests in Chaffee County. Plan on 3 hours including travel from Poncha Springs to visit the high elevation forests near Monarch Pass. We may hike up to 1 mile to visit the various sites.


Alex Rudney is a silviculturist with the US Forest Service, San Isabel National Forest stationed in Salida. The San Isabel National Forest covers the area from Tennessee Pass south to the Spanish Peaks. Alex has worked for the USFS in Forestry for 26 years in California and Colorado including 13 years in Salida. Alex attended Colorado State University and received a BS in Natural Resources Management in 1992.


The cost of the program is $5 for GARNA members; $7 for non members. Online registration is available below via our secure, pay pal site. Please note: you do not need a pay pal account, only a credit card.

Many GARNA programs require a liability release form be filled out each calendar year.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below. Please include a note with the program you are registering for.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel within 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. If minimum enrollment has not been met by program date, programs will be cancelled 2 days prior to the date and we will refund the full amount.
