July 14th @ 9am
Opening ceremony, BBQ & informal bike ride along the trail
Meeting place: The parking lot on the east side of hwy 24 before the bridge over the railroad near Hayden Meadows.
Another important milestone in the SR project is about to be officially celebrated: the July 14th opening of a short but crucial non-motorized trail under US24 at the AHRA Hayden Recreation site in southern Lake County.
The Crossroads Trail is officially a Lake County trail but owes much to the efforts of the Lake County Open Space Initiative LCOSI and its Facilitator Mike Conlin, multiple institutional partners and a huge amount of volunteer labor, much of it supplied by SR project folks.
The crossing is key to providing safe trail access from the AHRA Recreation site east of US24, with its existing popular reservoir and interpretive trail, and the 6-mile High Lonesome loop trail, to the extensive public lands managed by BLM and USFS in the Lodgepole Flats area to the west. It is also a crux move in the proposed SRT because it will allow us to request designation of another 13 miles from Hayden Reservoir to the SRTs northern terminus in Leadville at the Mineral Belt Trail.
