Upper Arkansas Wilderness Volunteers Spring Training

June 11, 2016

photo for spring trainingFor the second year in a row, the Upper Arkansas Wilderness Volunteers, a Chapter of GARNA, has organized 1 1/2 days of training on the trails for all day Saturday, June 11 and through noon on Sunday, June 12, at the Buena Vista Community Center. This training is open to the public. There is NO CHARGE for the training. Costs will be covered, in part, by a grant received from the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance (NWSA) through its “Boots on the Ground” program. The NWSA is building a nationwide network of volunteer organizations that provide stewardship for America’s enduring resource of wilderness. Its vision is to see each wilderness area in the National Wilderness Preservation System adopted by a wilderness stewardship organization, like UAWV, dedicated to protecting, restoring and nurturing the area’s wilderness.

UAWV was one of only 19 organizations nationwide to receive a grant through NWSA.

To assist UAWV in training volunteers, staff from the Leadville and Salida Ranger Districts will be on hand to deliver these training sessions, which will include:

  • Trail maintenance
  • Tool safety and use
  • What to include in your Day Pack on the trails
  • Campsite monitoring
  • Leave No Trace
  • How to handle encounters with wildlife
  • Bugs–how to identify wilderness predator bugs (i.e. the Spruce Beetle) and    report to Forest Service and how to identify/treat bug bites
  • How to use the UAWV Trails Database
  • Weather conditions–what to watch for

Light breakfast will be provided both Saturday and Sunday morning and lunch will be provided on Saturday, all at no charge to participants.

RSVPs are required. Please contact Kate Garwood at 719-966-9351 to reserve your place at the event.

If you care about the beautiful trails in the Arkansas Valley and would like to do your part to be a good steward of these tremendous resources in our community, this training is for you. We hope you will join us!
