Ute History Museum Field Trip to Montrose

Travel back in time 7000 years to the Archaic period by exploring the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site at the Ute History Museum in Montrose on Saturday, June 8. This site, considered the premier rock art site of the Uncompaghre Plateau and Valley area, has an incredible 42 acres of fantastically preserved Ute petroglyphs. It also has an ample concentration of artifacts that were once used for stone tool manufacturing. After visiting the site participants will learn about the true Colorado natives at the Ute Museum.

This field trip is scheduled to leave Salida at 7:00 am and meet at the Ute Museum in Montrose at 9:00 am. From there, attendees will travel the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site for a 1.5 mile hike at 9:30 am. At 12:30 pm participants will arrive back at the Museum for lunch before the guided museum tour from 1-2 pm. Participants will arrive back in Salida by 4 pm.

Participants visiting the rock art site need to bring a hat, water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. There are no facilities at the site. 

The maximum number of participants for this educational trip is 20, so sign up today! Cost for GARNA members is $25 per person, and non-members is $35 per person. Proceeds go toward the Ute History Museum in Montrose.

Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:

If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
