This series is meant to create a space for people to gather in celebration of the natural landscape and community connected by the Arkansas River.
What is a walkabout? Originally used to describe an Australian Aboriginal tradition of walking long distances on a spiritual journey, the word has absorbed many cultural meanings to generally describe a meaningful walk or journey to gain some understanding. “A walkabout requires a decision to take a first step, and a conscious and intentional movement (inwardly, outwardly or both) in the general direction of a longing or calling — with an openness to the actual experience, and a minimal attachment to expectations and results.” Betsy Lewis
Please join GARNA-partner the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) for an evening of stargazing at 12,126 feet at Cottonwood Pass where we will be a little closer to the stars! Led by Naturalist Kate Spinelli, marvel at the dark skies and luminous constellations. Constellation charts and binoculars will be available, but feel free to bring your own glass if you have it.
“The atoms that shape you were once the dust and gas of ancient stars,” says Jack Troeger of the Dark Sky Initiative. When we look at the dark night sky, the sparkling stars that mesmerize us are the same stars our ancestors saw and wondered about. Hear stories of the night sky told by our ancestors.
The program will begin at 8:30 pm but we will gather at 8:00 pm for hot chocolate or tea.
We will meet in the parking area on Cottonwood Pass at the Continental Divide. From Main Street in Buena Vista, take CR 306 or Cottonwood Pass Road west to the top of the pass, and turn left into the parking area at the viewpoint.
Please note that it will be quite chilly on the pass at night. Please dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes, bring water and a flashlight or headlamp. Individuals and families are welcome.
There is no fee for this walk. All ages welcome. Carpooling is encouraged if possible, though not arranged by GARNA or AHRA.
To register or for questions, please contact Kate at 719 539 7289 or kate.spinelli@state.co.us.
Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.

If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.
