Salida burned down three times in the late 1800s so town officials declared that all new buildings had to be built from brick. Thanks to that decision, Salida now has one of the biggest and best-preserved downtown historic districts in Colorado. On the Salida Town Tour, we will ride bikes through the historic district and along the interpretive bike trail. The tour will include lively stories about the legends and history of the area. As we roll slowly through downtown, we’ll learn about the history of the valley, the railroad, the downtown district, the brothels, the gunfights, the ghosts and more. We will also visit the Salida Museum! This ride follows the city streets and bike path and is great for individuals of all ages.
Tour guides:
John McCarthy, GARNA Board member and railroad history buff, Jack Chivvis, local artist and historian, and Larry Kovacic and Bob Campbell with the Salida Museum. Every participant is also invited to share their knowledge!
Participants will need to have a bike suitable for an easy ride around Salida. There will be regular stops to look at and discuss historical resources in the area. If a bike rental is needed, contact Kimberly at Absolute Bikes or 719-539-9295. Bike rentals are not included in the cost of the program, but discounts on rentals are available.
The cost of the program is $15 for GARNA members, $20 for non-members; youth 18 and younger are $5 with a paying adult. Price includes 2-hour historical town tour, entry into the Salida Museum (normally $5 for adults), and a Salida trails map courtesy of Absolute Bikes (a $13 value!)

Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.
Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:
If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
