Join GARNA and the USDA Forest Service Salida Ranger District to visit last summer’s Hayden Pass Fire burn area. Witness firsthand some of the effects of the fire on the San Isabel National Forest such as flooding, erosion, and effects on wildlife and fisheries. District Ranger Jim Pitts, Chris Naccarato, USDA Forest Service, Mountain Zone Fire Management Officer, Jamie Krezelok, Hydrologist and Janelle Valladares, Zone Aquatic Biologist will lead the group. This is a follow up to GARNA’s program in January on the fire and the role of fire in modern wildland management.
The team from the Forest Service will cover how the fire spread and its impacts to vegetation, to the soils and the hydrology of the area. We’ll learn about what kind of movements are being seen in the aftermath of the fire, how that impacts potential flooding and the modeling that has been done to predict flooding.
The program will also focus on the burn area fisheries including Hayden Creek and how the fire impacted habitat of the sensitive native cutthroat trout. We’ll hear about the ongoing efforts involving the restoration and maintenance of that population and how the fishery is doing now.
The group will start at the Rainbow trailhead past the Coaldale campground and walk along the Rainbow Trail to the burn area. Total walking distance is about 2 miles roundtrip and 420 ft elevation gain/loss however a portion of the walk will be on somewhat loose, rocky terrain.
The program will begin at 9:00 am and end at about 12:00 pm. Carpooling from Salida will be organized and participants will receive this information after registering.
The cost of the program is $5 for GARNA members, $7 for non-members. Space is limited. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs.
