May is shearing time at Jefferson Farms Natural Fibers, a local Alpaca and Paco-Vicuna farm. GARNA has been invited to observe the process and take a tour on Tuesday, May 16 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
You may have seen these adorable animals in the green fields just west of Salida off Hwy 291. Jefferson Farms Natural Fibers was started in 1995 and operates in Salida and Denver. The site houses around 100 Alpacas and 300 Paco-Vicunas. Soft, very fine (around 18 micron) natural fiber yarn is their primary product. The earliest Alpacas were domesticated from the Vicuña by the native South American peoples as long as 6,000 years ago. The resulting fiber was so incredibly fine and soft that Incan Royalty alone was permitted to wear it. A Paco-Vicuna (PV for short) is a natural cross breed with the finer fiber of the Vicuna, but with the faster growth of the Alpaca.
After the tour, everyone is invited to bring a sack lunch and eat lunch with the crew.
The cost is $5 for GARNA members and $7 for non-members. Advanced registration is required. Online registration is available below via our secure, pay pal site. Please note: you do not need a pay pal account, only a credit card. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. The tour is limited to 20 people; if we receive enough interest, we may set up a 2nd tour.

Many GARNA programs require a Liability Release Form be filled out each calendar year.
Your registration is secured upon receipt of payment, as long as there space is still available in a program. If you prefer not to register online (recommended), you may mail a check, made out to “GARNA” to the address below or stop by the office. Please include a note with the program you are registering for. Be aware, some programs sell out quickly, and we cannot confirm your spot with a mailed registration.

Cancellation policy:
If we are notified of your need to cancel by 24 hours of program date, your program fee will be refunded except for a $3.00 administrative fee. No refunds within 24 hours or after the event (but most events are transferable). If minimum enrollment has not been met 2 days before program date, programs will be cancelled and we will refund the full amount.
